Joseph's surname is PANTER his father's surname is PAINTER of ENGLISH orgin. PANTER is an ANGLO-SCOTTISH surname. Also to add to the confussion there is another ANGLO-Scottish surname of PANTHER. These names are not misspelling but are established surnames. Question is how does the son Joseph receive a surname different from his father when his siblings retain the fathers name?
