Ascutney, VT – Edward J. Abbott, 86, a longtime resident of Ascutney, passed away peacefully Saturday May 28th at Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor.

He was born February 14, 1925 in West Pawlet, VT the son of late Maurice and Harriett (Bushman) Abbott formerly of Springfield, VT. Edward attended school at schools throughout Vermont and Upstate New York as his family moved to find work. He was married to Emily Johnson August 2, 1947 in Ascutney where they have lived most of their married lives.

Mr. Abbott worked at the Greeley Farm and Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, at the Bellows Falls Cooperative Creamery in Windsor and farmed for many years on the Oscar and Vera Johnson Farm in Ascutney.

He was a 63 year member of the Connecticut River Grange #518 in Ascutney. He enjoyed dancing, Country and Western Music and a good joke.

He is survived by his wife, Emily and two daughters Annah Abbott and Jan Abbott. He also leaves a brother Donald Abbott of Springfield, VT; a niece Karen (Abbott) Read, her husband Scott and daughter Jenna all of Timber Lake, NC; nephew Vernon Abbott and his wife Dianne of Madison, CT. He was predeceased by a brother Maurice E. Abbott, Jr.

At his request there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 2PM Wednesday June 1st at the Ascutneyville Cemetery in Ascutney, VT with the Rev. Amanda Lape-Freeburg of the Old South Congregational Church of Windsor officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Old South Congregational Church, P.O. Box 298, Windsor, VT 05089 or Lucy McKenzie Humane Society, P.O. Box 702, Brownsville, VT 05037.
