Robert was born in Monroe County, the son of Thomas Nathaniel Freeman and Malinda Lowe Freeman. He was the husband of Mary Jane Smiley. He was long time successful farmer in the Nantahala Township while raising five children by himself. His wife, Mary Jane, passed away when the oldest child was nine.
