Thomas was the son of Thomas H. and Mary Elizabeth Murray Barnhart. He married Florence Helen Reilly on December 4, 1913. They had eight children. Jack Winfield, Thomas Henry Jr, Betty Jane, Kenneth Tobias, Harold Maxwell, Ruth Marie, Mary Lou and Ralph Earl. He was working as a fireman at the steam railroad in Pennsylvania in 1930. He died from a fractured skull from an accident at work.
