When Samuel's family moved west from Iowa Sam was responsible for leading the cow at the back of the family. His shoes had to be saved so he walked most of the the way in his bare feet. He eventually moved to Lake City and was a cook at a hotel. He met Anna and they were married and moved to Gunnison and owned and operated Johnson's Restaurant on Main Street. Sam loved to write beautiful poetery.
