William James Mayes (3rd Regiment, South Carolina Infantry Company K Rank Private) was the eldest son of Samuel James and Barbara Elizabeth Black Mayes of Jonesville, Union County South Carolina. William was wounded twice in the war and died in Richmond due to illness contracted by those wounds. William's brother Samuel Scott Mayes was also killed in service in Richmond and buried in Richmond in an unknown location. William's youngest brother Daniel Wallace Mayes, my great grandfather, also fought in the war and survived and had 5 children that lived to adulthood. William's wife Francis "Fannie" Lancaster Mayes died a month after giving birth to their second child in 1861. The children were orphaned after the death of their father William and were raised by their grandparents Samuel and Barbara Mayes. William's wife is buried at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery Buffalo Union County South Carolina. Her headstone pictured to the right with a memorial to William at the bottom.
