R. M. Addington & John B. Smith married Apr 1, 1841, Union Co, GA.

I visited this cemetery in 2004 for the specific purpose of locating the graves of Rachel Matilda Addington Smith and her husband, John Bayless Smith.

Tombstone is inscribed only with her name: R. Matilda Smith. Date of birth and exact date of death were taken from the excellent family records of her husband's parents and later Smith family generations.

It is my understanding that the cemetery of Hemptown Baptist Church is shared with the Bethel United Methodist Church, located on the opposite side of Hwy 76. The Smith family was historically Methodist; it is believed that John & Rachel were members of the Bethel UMC; their graves are very close to the highway which separates the two churches.

After Rachel's death, the five Smith children went to live with their paternal grandparents, Robert & Cyntha Kell Smith of Gilmer Co, GA. The three boys are listed with their grandparents in 1860 census. Mary Louise Smith had married in Mar of 1860; Altha Adaline Smith was listed in her sister's household in 1860 census.

Rachel Matilda Addington was the daughter of James Addington and Winifred Woodfin Addington. Note that her brother, William Riley Addington, married Martha Lucinda Smith, the sister of John Bayless Smith.
