Rick Gwin died as a result of trying to miss an accident at Baer Field Raceway, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Gwin, racing in what was scheduled to be the next-to-last event of the night, wcrashed while trying to avoid a wreck that happened in front of him as the 10-car field made its way down the backstretch.
The right rear tire of Ron Koehler's car hit the front of Tom Paterson, knocking the front left tire off that car. Chris Jagger then collided with Paterson, whose car was sending a shower of sparks down the track. In trying to avoid the action in front of him, Gwin slid sideways into a water barrel-and-tire retaining wall, with the left side of his car hitting at full force.
There was no way to avoid it,he was trying to clear it (the wreck) before he ran out of room.
