George Andrew Pappas, former dry cleaning man and shoe repair shop operator and a pioneer in the dying of leathers was stricken early today at his home, 1356 N. Parkway and was dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital at 8am. He had had a severe cold for several days but his condition had not been thought critical, relatives said. He was 62.

Mr. Pappas was the founder of Ga-Di Corporation, which manufactured Ga-Di white shoe polish, hailed by several consumers groups as among the best on the market. The process was later sold to Esquire.

Born in Zoriano, Greece, Mr. Pappas had lived in the United States for the past 45 years. For some 30 years he owned and operated Messco Cleaners, adjacent to Goldsmith's and later leased and operated the shoe repair shop in Goldsmith's. Hew was a member of Hellenic Orthodox Church and a Shriner.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Helen Ritsos Pappas of Memphis, two daughters, Miss Julia Pappas of New Orleans, and Miss Dorothy Pappas of Memphis; his son, Andrew G. Pappas of the Air Force stationed at Biloxi; two brothers, Pete A. Pappas of Memphis, and John A. Pappas of Charleston, S.C., and three sisters, Mrs. Insastasia Rigas, Miss Tolua Pappas and Mrs. Vasili Papakosta, all of Soriano, Greece.
