Confederate veteran. Son of George and Anna Neilson Gillespie of Rhea County, Tennessee. Studied medicine in Nashville, and was practicing at Tynersville in 1860 with a wife (Nancy S. Brazelton - married 1854) and one child. Besides being a doctor, he operated a general store and traded in livestock. Trustee of Mars Hill Academy in Rhea County. Captured as an American soldier in the Mexican War. Opposed secession, but still enlisted in the 5th East Tennessee Volunteers on October, 17, 1861. Then recruited what became the 43rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment, and was elected Colonel of that unit on December 14, 1861. Captured at Vicksburg and paroled. Rejoined army after parole, and was one of President Jefferson Davis's escorts in Washington, Georgia, where the President surrendered. After the war, Col. Gillespie was a resident of Washington, Rhea County, Tennessee. (Note: Location of Mynatt Cemetery is one mile south of Washington in Rhea County.)
