John Charles Utter Johnson, known as Charlie, the son of Marie Utter and Walter Roy Johnson, was named for his maternal grandfather, Dr. John Charles Utter of Mount Carmel, Illinois.

About 1933, the family moved to Anniston, Alabama. Following high school graduation, Charlie served in the Naval Air Corps during WWII, and then graduated from Jacksonville State University in Alabama. Charlie then earned post graduate degrees in Education and Administration at the University of Alabama.

In 1951 Charlie began his career in school administration in the Anniston, Alabama city school system as the principal of the Johnston Junior High School. Charley retired from the Anniston school system in 1979. Charlie was married to Mary Elizabeth Lloyd.
