SHREVEPORT, LA - Dr. Jean Chenier Brierre a native of Dame Marie, Haiti and resident of Shreveport, La. passed away on Monday May 16, 2011 at the Pierremont Health Care Center. Age 95.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 11 o'clock a.m. from Cathedral of St John Berchmans, 939 Jordan Street, Fr Andre McGrath, celebrant. Visitation 9 o'clock a.m. Interment: St Joseph Cemetery No 1.

A wake service will be held at Cathedral of St John Berchmans on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 7 o'clock p.m. followed by a recitation of the rosary. Friends may call from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m.at the church

He will be remembered to all who knew him as a Dedicated Physician, Renaissance Man and devoted Catholic. Dr Brierre was a devoted member of the Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for over 60 years

He was honored by the Pope in 1974 for his work in the church by being awarded membership in the society of St. Gregory the Great. In 1980 he was once again honored by the Pope and admitted to The Knights of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Dr Brierre had a private medical practice for 54 years. He held membership in the Shreveport Medical Society, American College of OB-GYN, American Medical Society, National Medical Society, La Societe Medicale de Montreal and the Shreveport Medical Society. In addition, he served as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine, Louisiana State Health Science Center, on the board of Louisiana School of Professions, Holy Angels School of Handicap Children.

His intellectual interests were broad and he was very accomplished in the areas of both the arts and sciences. His civil rights work of the 1950's brought change in the form of integration to the hospitals in Shreveport and integration of Catholic schools in Shreveport in 1966. He remained a voracious reader, classical and jazz music lover, art lover, collector and advocate, His interests over the years included breeding dogs, race horses, farm animals, real estate development, photography, interior design, exercise and nutrition.

Throughout his life, his affiliations with different groups included; Friendship House, the National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ), the New Dimension Choral Society, Minority Business Council, Carver Credit Union and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council.

Dr. Brierre was preceded in death by his wife Nicole Riboul Brierre, his parents Chenier and Aurelia Brierre, and his sister Marthe Brierre. He is survived by his daughters, Monique Brierre Aziz and Michele Brierre Jean-Pierre; two sons, Jean Joseph Brierre and Charles Henri Brierre, three grandchildren, Nicolas Brierre Aziz, Alexandria Nicolin Brierre and Angelina Simone Brierre; two sons-in-law, Omar I. Aziz and Ulrick Jean-Pierre; daughter-in-law, Patricia Brierre; his "Sister" Maxine Prescott Sarpy and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many devoted friends.
