Son of William Barbery and Polly Ward. Siblings:Lucinda,Nancy,Coleman,Mary,Milly,and Hulda.

Alexander served in the Confederate Forces,56th NC Infantry, Company G. He enlisted 12th of April, 1862 and served the entire War except for a short hospital stay after being wounded 2nd June 1864 at Bermuda Hundred Battles. He was listed as one of the soldiers on the roll for surrender on 9th April, 1865. He is described as being 5'9" tall on his induction form. Occupation was "farmer."
