Son of William & Melinda (Newton) Bates. Note: His birth in Sutton - and of most of his siblings - is recorded in the published Vital Records of Sutton to 1850. However, the birth record for his daughter Georgianna has "State of New York" as his place of birth.

He and Susan Ruth Fuller married in Sutton on May 15, 1854.

His burial in Section 7b with other Bates family members is recorded on Pg. 13 of a 2010 compilation by Daniel Cox of Eagle Scout Troop 254 based in Oxford.

Note: On the back side of the Bates family obelisk are cenotaphs for his mother, Melinda (Newton) Bates, and brother Timothy. Both are buried in the Bates family lot in Section 8, which is in the southwest corner of the cemetery, overlooking Armsby Road.
