Michael, the son of Cassel A. Charles (deseased) and Dottie Charles, the brother of Craig Charles of Bristo VA, enlistd in the US Marine Corps on June 15, 1967 in Beckley WV. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

A squad on combat patrol south of Hill 55 in the vicinity of the village complex of Giang La in Dien Ban District received several rounds of sniper fire from across the river. PFC Charles was hit and killed by the hostile rifle fire. Unable to pursue the enemy sniper because of the river barrier, artillery fire was requested and brought to bear on the suspected enemy position with the patrol returning bearing their casualty on a stretcher.
