Clarence J. Lockwood was born in Peekskill March 11, 1890, the son of Elijah J. and Mary E, (Lyman) Lockwood. He attended school at Oakside and was In the high school when he left to begin work. He was with his father in the milk business for some time. Then he worked for a number of years with the New York Central as an electrician on the Mott Haven Division. Then he returned to the dairy business, working for the Van Cortlandt Dairy, conducted by his brother. Nearly two years ago he became an employee of the Water Department of the village and when the recent, changes were made at the pump house he was placed in charge of the filter plant, which he was running at the time of his death.

Mr. Lockwood joined Cortlandt lodge No. 9, I. O. O. F., on Sept. 3,1914. He took an active Interest in the lodge work, accepted an appointive office , passed through the chairs, becoming a Past Grand In 1917. He became a member of the Patriarchal family by joining Mt. Ararat Encampment No. !), I. 0. O. F., on January 13, 1915, and passed through the chairs, becoming Chief Patriarch in April, 1917. Mr. Lockwood became a reserve member of Cortlandt Hook & Ladder Company, May 30th, 1905 and was made a department member on March 14. 1911. He'was active in all the company's affairs, served on various committees and as a member of the fire patrol. three years ago he was elected Second Assistant Foreman. Two years ago he was advanced to First Assistant Forman, and last January was made Captain, the designation of officers having been changed. Mr. Lockwood on March 20, 1913, married Miss Clara M. Lent, daughter of Thomas K, and Clara Mansfield Lent, She survives him. He also leaves , his father and mother and two brothers Edwin J ;and Clifford, of Peekskill

He and six others lost their lives fighting a warehouse fire at the Fleischmann Plant. An article on the ‘Net states that 7 firemen lost their lives fighting a disastrous fire at the Fleischmann Plant at Charles Point; and a Firemen Memorial Wing was built 1919, added to the Peekskill Hospital, now the Hudson Valley Hospital Center.

On the Peekskill Waterfront Green stands a bell as a memorial to the seven firefighters who lost their lives. The plaque reads as follows:

Peekskill Fire Department Alarm Bell

On August 1, 1918 this bell tolled the alarm for the Fleischmann Manufacturing Company Fire, at which seven Peekskill Volunteer Firefighters lost their lives.

Dedicated to the memory of those gallant men who gave their lives in the Fleischmann Fire August 1, 1918.
