Theodore "Ted" Coughran

Theodore "Ted" Coughran was born to Joe Albert Coughran, Sr., and D'Jelma Petrie Coughran in San Antonio, TX, on March 25, 1929. His family lived in Boerne, TX, where he attended school and graduated with the BHS Class of 1947. Ted was a graduate (BS Geological Engineering) of Texas A & M, Class ‘53, and served with the US Army in Nuremberg, Germany, after which he returned to A&M and received an MS in Geology in 1959. Employment with Magnolia Oil Company (later to become Mobil Oil Company) began a fifteen-year association that included working and living in Texas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Libya and interpretation of international geophysical data. In 1974, Ted became a partner in Professional Geophysics Incorporated and continued his career, interpreting data from offshore Australia, Vietnam, Southern Germany, as well as onshore/offshore Nicaragua and Israel Sinai.

Ted was a 50-year plus member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists; a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Dallas Geological and Geophysical Society, Ft. Worth Geological and Geophysical Society, and Hill Country Geoscientists, San Antonio. The many friends he made during his long career in the "oil patch" added much pleasure to his life.

Ted had a happy heart! He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, being able to find something amusing in almost any situation. Wherever he was, there was joy de vivre. And Dr. Pepper. Ted loved the outdoors. His favorite vacation was fly fishing in Colorado; his main hobby was planting trees of all varieties. One of his friends remarked that wherever Ted lived came to look like Sherwood Forest.

One of Ted's greatest pleasures was the twelve years he spent as Scoutmaster of Argyle Boy Scout Troop 192. Recurring contact with those scouts as they matured and began careers and families of their own meant a great deal to him. Another service to his community was as a member/president of the Argyle School Board; he also served as a director of the Argyle Water Supply Corporation for 28 years. In 1991, Ted and Barbara were named Texas A&M University Parents of the Year, something he considered one of the best honors he ever received. Paramount in Ted's life was his love of and devotion to his family. He and Barbara Blaize were married in 1957 and had more than 52 happy and eventful years together. Ted never missed an activity of his children unless he was out of town; he was a happily involved parent. He was proud of their accomplishments and spoke often of how much he enjoyed them as adults.

Ted is survived by his wife, Barbara; their children, Kathleen, Mark, Sharon, D'Jelma (Brannon) Perkison, and Susan (J.P.) Strickland, as well as ten cherished grandchildren: Jeremy and Kendall Magee; Melora, Alanna and Theo Coughran; Blaize Coughran; Quina Perkison; and Zane, Maria, and Chastity Strickland. He was preceded in death by his parents, D'Jelma & Joe A. Coughran, Sr; his brother, Joe A. Coughran, Jr.; and his sister, Dorothy C.
