Lonnie the son of Rolla E. Dykes and Hazel I. Dykes of Buffalo WY entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on October 21, 1969 in Denver CO. He arrived in Vietnam on May 8 1970, and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On June 9, at a defensive position south of Phuoc Chi hamlet in Que Son District near the Cho Dun River a Marine asleep several feet from his fighting hole awoke and saw a silhouette in the bushes, thinking it was a hostile intruder he fired his weapon. He had mistaken a fellow Marine for the enemy, seriously wounding PFC Dykes. Evacuated to the 1st MED Battalion in DaNang, PFC Dykes died the following day.
