Rock Musician, Grunge Pioneer, Folk Figure. Born in Columbus, Mississippi and raised in Bainbridge Island, Washington as the youngest of three sons, he discovered rock music via the big theatrical arena shows of the 1970s. At the age of 14 with his older brother, guitarist Kevin Wood and drummer Regan Hagar, he formed the band Malfunkshun, which performed in makeup and outrageous clothes. In 1988, with drummer Greg Gilmore (10 Minute Warning-Skin Yard), bassist Jeff Ament and guitarists Bruce Fairweather & Stone Gossard (Green River), he formed the Seattle-based rock band Mother Love Bone (MLB). The group quickly built up a loyal local following, was signed by PolyGram/Polydor Records/Mercury Records in 1989 and released the six-track album "Shine" through the PolyGram subsidiary, Stardog Records. By September of 1989, the band was on a nationwide tour when Wood had developed a drug problem and was admitted to rehab center, where spent the last months of the year. Wood with the band started 1990 by playing a few shows around Seattle as they waited for the projected springtime release of their next album. On March 16, 1990, he was found comatose in his apartment and he was placed on life support, but died three days later. Their debut album, "Apple" was released in July 1990 to critical acclaim. The dissolution of Mother Love Bone led to the formation of Pearl Jam and the Temple of the Dog (TOTD) side project-tribute album (1991). The Alice in Chains song "Would?" (1992) is dedicated to Wood.
