Elex was well known in the Fair Bluff community. He was considered the "Home Town Horse Doctor". Married twice. First to Mary S. Barnes and then to Pauline P. Barnes. He raised his family in Fair Bluff, N.C. Elex was in good health up until one night while his wife Pauline was sick, he was going to another room to sleep. While outside he misjudge the porch area, fell and broke his hip. From that point his health continued to decline.
