Carl Vernon Carter, Sr., of North Charleston, beloved husband of Shigeko Okano Carter, entered into eternal rest on the morning of May 3, 2011.

Mr. Carter was born May 17, 1931, in St. Paul, SC, son of William "Luther" Carter, Sr. and Bessie Mae Canady Carter.

He retired as a Gunnery Sgt. with the United States Marine Corps after serving his country honorably for almost twenty-four years. During his military career, he served in Korea and Vietnam. He received numerous accommodations including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal, Rifle and Pistol Experts Badge.

Mr. Carter was active in the community having served as a board member of the Ashley River Fire Department. He participated both in civic clubs and his children's school activities. He was a former member of the U.S. Dance Club, Charleston Chapter.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Shigeko; daughter Diane Elaine Reesby and husband Antony of Youngstown, OH; sons, Carl V. Carter, Jr. and wife Carol of Charleston, SC and Luther I. Carter, MD, former Commander with the United States Navy, and wife Lori Lee of Gulf Breeze, FL; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his daughter Crystal Denise Carter.

Relatives and friends of Carl Carter are invited to attend the funeral services May 8, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., in J. Henry Stuhr, Northwoods Chapel with interment to follow with full military honors in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
