David Silas Cox was 3 years old when his father, Marion McDonald "Don" Cox, was killed at the Battle of Dove Creek, an ill-fated battle with a large band of Kickapoo Indians. After Don's death, David Silas's mother, Martha E. Baugh Cox, married S. P. McInnis. His two Cox siblings were Mitchell McDonald "Uncle Bud" Cox and Texanna "Maggie" Cox Wright.
