WORCESTER -- Thomas J. McCarthy, 82, of 17 Corning Ave., a decorated World War II veteran and a longtime bricklayer, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Odd Fellows Home after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Jane E. (Tisdell) McCarthy; a daughter, Susan M. Mero of Worcester; five sons, Michael J. McCarthy and Thomas J. McCarthy Jr., both of Shrewsbury, Terrance J., S. Patrick and Dennis M. McCarthy, all of Worcester; two sisters, Margaret M. Xenos of Worcester and Marion F. Mastronardi of Revere; two brothers, Robert A. and Edward J. McCarthy, both of Worcester; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A sister, Ruth A. Chanis, and a brother, Richard M. McCarthy, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Michael J. and Mary E. (Morrissey) McCarthy. He graduated from St. Peter's High School and attended Northeastern University. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and was believed to be the first Worcester soldier to land at the D-Day invasion. He served in North Africa and Europe, including the invasions of Italy, Holland and the Battle of the Bulge. He rose to the rank of sergeant and was awarded a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts.

Mr. McCarthy was a bricklayer more than 50 years and was a Gold Card member with Worcester County Local 6 International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers, where he served in several capacities. After retiring, he was an assistant clerk of the works during construction of the Worcester Centrum. He later was director of the engineering department at University of Massachusetts Medical Center, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Association and past president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 36.

The funeral will be held Friday, Nov. 15, from Kelly Funeral Home, 154 Lincoln St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc Church, 570 Lincoln St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the funeral home, with a ritual at 7 p.m. by members of A.O.H. Division 36.
