Violet Hairston was a 90-year-old mother of four who walked two miles a day, mowed her own yard and drove her own car until she died in the April 27, 2011 storm. She had the prettiest flower garden around, according to her son, Howard Hairston.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 2 p.m. from Rainsville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Grindstaff and the Rev. Fred Porter officiating. Entombment will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens with Rainsville Funeral Home, Inc. directing. Visitation will be Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. and Sunday, May 1, 2011 from noon-2 p.m.
Survivors include three sons, Ira La Wayne (Doris) Hairston, of Henagar, James Howard (Brenda) Hairston, of Rainsville, David Ray (Deborah) Hairston, of Fort Payne; 1 daughter-in-law, Carolyn Ann Hairston, of Valley Head; one sister, Maggie Lou Hicks, of Rainsville; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James C. Hairston; one son, Royce Cecil Hairston; and one granddaughter, Michelle Hairston.
