CAMERON-ROSE, HUGH ADAM CAMPBELL ROSE
Pilot Officer (W.Op./Obs.)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Unit Text: 235 Sqdn.
Age: 33
Service No: 115603
Additional information: Son of David George and Mary Henrietta Helen Cameron-Rose; husband of Stella Gordon Cameron-Rose, of Rhos-on-Sea, Denbighshire. :

On 8 Oct 1942, in poor weather, three 235 Squadron Bristol Beaufighter Mark VIC aircraft took flight from RAF Chivenor, in Devonshire, on an interceptor patrol operation; these aircraft were #W/235, #G/235  and #H/235, each having a crew of two airmen.  The aircraft flew together towards their assigned patrol area.  About half an hour after taking off, Beaufighter #W/235 was forced to return to base when engine problems developed.

Following its patrol duty, Beaufighter #G/235 signalled to Beaufighter #H/235 its intention to return to the Chivenor base.  But #H/235 then started having engine problems, so was forced to ditch into the sea, about 5 miles from Penzance, Cornwall.  Unfortunately, the two airmen of the ditched Beaufighter (T5141), Pilot Flying Officer Ewart Vincent CHANDLER,  and Observer/Wireless  Operator Pilot Officer Sidney WHITFIELD, did not survive the accident.

A fourth Beaufighter, #J/235 (X8086), had also taken flight from RAF Chivenor, intending to fly to RAF St. Eval in Cornwall.  It was diverted, however, to search for the downed H/235 in the area of the sea near Penzance.  It, too, began having engine problems and, in attempting a forced landing, Beaufighter J/235 hit a boulder near Trythall School in New Mill, Madron, Cornwall, and crashed, killing the two aircrew,  Pilot Flying Officer Edward Duerden NEAL, DFC and  Observer/Wireless Operator Pilot Officer Hugh Adam Campbell Rose CAMERON-ROSE.
