Born in Vermont Charles C. Cushing began farming in Afton in the mid 1850's. When the Civil War came Charles collected a bounty and served in Co C. of the Seventh Minnesota Infantry as a Musician. After the war, in 1867, he opened a new hotel in Afton called the Cushing House. Charles died and left the Cushing House to his second wife, Phoebe, who operated it till 1907. The new owners renamed the hotel, The Afton House Inn, which is still in operation today.
