Robert Newton Erwin was born in Henry county, Kentucky about 1840, to Joseph Erwin and Temperence Louden Erwin.
He married Lucy Raisor in Henry county, Kentucky about 1860. To this union was born Martha about 1861 and Harrison, born about 1863.

Robert N. Erwin enlisted with Co. "H", 9th Kentucky Cavalry 13 August 1862 at Eminence, Kentucky and served until 26 Aug 1863 when he was discharged at Eminence, Kentucky. He was disabled by measles resulting in eye disease , left shoulder disability and deafness of left ear. His service records show service at New Market, Kentucky.

After the Civil War Robert joined his parents and family and moved to Lawwrence, County, Illinois.

Lucy Raisor Erwin died and Robert N. Erwin Married Mary Ann Porter in Lawrence county, Illinois, 25 Apr 1867. Emma, born 1868 in Illinois and Sarah, born 1869 were products of this union. Mary Ann Porter Erwin died in 1875 and is buried in the Pollard cemetery in Lawrence, county, Illinois.

Robert N. Erwin then married Martha Jane Hook, 13 Aug 1877 in Lawrence county, Illinois. Later the family moved to near Poplar Bluff in Butler county, Missouri.

Robert applied in August, 1888 and received an Invalid pension for his Civil War service. He listed no children under the age of 16 when he applied. The pension records record that Robert Newton Erwin died 20 Apr 1899 in Butler county, Missuri. He was buried in Green Hill cemetery.

Martha Jane Hook Erwin received a widow's pension which listed her date of death as 16 Jun 1918.
