Congolese Politician. President of the Congo Republic (1963-1968). A teacher by profession, he joined the Democratic Union for the Defense of African Independence, headed by Fulbert Youlou, who served as Congo's first President. In 1960 Congo gained independence and in 1963 he became provincial head of the government when Youlou was forced to resign and then elected President the same year. In 1968 Massamba-Debat was forced out of office during a military coup and was replaced by Marien Ngouabi on January 1, 1969. In 1977 Ngouabi was assassinated and Massambi-Debat was arrested and charged with plotting the killing. He was executed on March 25, 1977.
