Yreka resident Verna Bray Tyrer passed away Jan. 28, 2005, at Madrone Hospice House.
Verna was born July 16, 1908, in Bray, to Walter H. and Lora Fox Bray. When she was four years old the family moved from Butte Valley to a large ranch near Hornbrook, the site of the present R-Ranch.

She received her elementary education in Hornbrook, then attended Yreka High School and Heald's Business College in Sacramento.

She worked for the Siskiyou News in Yreka from 1930 until 1937, when she married Harold Tyrer of Dunsmuir. They had one son, Michael.

Verna moved to Yreka with her son in December 1939, when her husband died in a railroad accident.

She was then employed with the Sharp Lumber Company, and later the county of Siskiyou for many years, serving as court clerk, clerk of the board of supervisors and secretary to both Superior Court judges, James M. Allen and J. Everett Barr. In 1963, she and her son purchased Janson's Stationery, changing the name to Tyrer's Stationery.

Verna was a long-time member of the Yreka United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Soroptimist International of Yreka, serving as president from 1964-1965; a member of Stella Chapter OES; a charter member of the Yreka Nile Club; and a member the Yreka Trail Riders. She always was active in business, community and civic affairs and was named in the 1974-1975, edition of "Who's Who of American Women".

Survivors include her son, Michael Tyrer, of Yreka; brother Gordon J. Bray, of Yreka; sister Edith Balfrey, of Yreka; step-grandchildren, Lisa Van de Hey and Mark Wedin, of Gridley; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Verna was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.

A funeral service is 2 p.m., Feb. 2, at Girdner Funeral Chapel, with Reverend David Samelson officiating. Interment will be in the family plot at Hornbrook-Henley Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Yreka United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 760, Yreka, CA. 96097, Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Cr., Yreka, CA. 96097, or to a charity of one's choice.
