He was born in MI to William Fontaine Alexander and Emily Read Potter. William Jr. attended Princeton University in 1928. According to the 1910 Census the family was living in Clarksburg, WV. According to these records, William Sr. was born around 1881.

According to the 1940 Census William Jr. was living in Dallas, Texas, with his wife and daughter. His occupation was insurance agent which was his occupation when he was killed during the Braniff flight 352 crash near Dawson, Texas.
