James F. Long, 85, of Davenport, Iowa, died Sunday, January 8, 2006 at the Davenport Lutheran Home. Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 13, at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2363 West Third Street, Davenport. Visitation will be held 4:00 P.M.- 8:00 P.M. Thursday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport, where military graveside services will be conducted by Davenport American Legion Post 26. Memorials may be made to St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Mr. Long was born September 14, 1920 in Davenport, Iowa to John L. and Celestine A. (Rattinger) Long. He served with the U.S. Army during WW II, with the Persian Gulf Command. He married Dorothy I. Doss June 14, 1941 in Davenport. Mr. Long worked as an engineer with DRI & NW Railroad 39 1/2 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post #26, Davenport, United Transportation Union, and had served as a Boy Scout Leader. He also enjoyed fishing, photography, woodworking, reading and working in his yard. Jim was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Bonnie Swanson of Davenport, and Judy (Thomas) Mossage of Park View, Iowa; son, James L. (Pamela) Long of Davenport; grandchildren, Wendy (Matthew) Stolley, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Neumann, Renee (John) Loomis, Michael (Page) Mossage, Stephanie Long and Eric Long; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Anna and Jacob Stolley, Tyler, Joshua and Ryan Neumann, Morgan Loomis and Olivia Mossage; sisters-in-law, Viola Long of Clinton, Iowa, and Grace Doss of Laurens, South Carolina; brothers-in-law, Darrell Doss of Davenport, and Loren Hughes of Pittsburg, California. He was preceded in death by sisters, Marie and Dorothy, and brothers, John, George, Francis and Joseph.
