RALEIGH -- Marvin Wyatt Cates, 84, of Raleigh, died Friday, April 15, 2011 at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh.

Marvin was born August 23, 1926 in Hillsborough to Marshall L. Cates and Bera Dunn Cates.

He was a graduate of Hillsborough High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Marvin was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific.

Marvin was employed as a Division Rights of Way Agent with Progress Energy, retiring with over 23 years of service. He was a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, where he served as usher for many years.

Marvin was a lifetime member of the Raleigh Civitan Club with over 54 years of perfect attendance.

He served in all of the local offices and as Governor of the NC District East.

He received Civitan's highest honor by being awarded the District and International Honor Keys.

Marvin was instrumental in the fundraising efforts for the Boy's Home at Lake Waccamaw; the Tammy Lynn Center; and the Civitan Center at Duke University.

He was known for his sense of humor; storytelling; and his anonymous generosity to others.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Marshall Luther Cates, Jr.; George Madison Cates; and Clarence Truitt Cates (Infant); all of Hillsborough.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 42 years, Vonnie Cates; brother, Chandler Cates of Hillsborough; and numerous nieces and nephews; and special great niece Donna Carol Von Herbulis.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2011 at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27608.

Burial will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park.
