Gaffney, SC -- Jimmy Kent Abernathy, 70, of 125 Natures Trail, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of Hazel Addis Abernathy and the son of the late Jimmy Abernathy and Edith Durham Abernathy. He was a graduate of Gaffney High School and a United States Army Veteran, having served in the 101st Airborne as a Paratrooper. He was retired from Southern Bell, after 28 years of service, where he was a member of The Pioneers. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. Mr. Abernathy was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, also surviving are two daughters, Penny Bryant and husband, John of Gaffney and Mary Kent Bishop and husband, Carroll of Chesnee; a brother, David Abernathy and wife, Mary of Lanexa, VA; a sister, Marybeth Solesbee of Boiling Springs; two grandchildren, Emily Bryant and Joshua Bishop; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 PM on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 4:00 PM in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Clyde Thomas, Rev. Stuart A. Kersey and Mr. Joshua Bishop officiating. Interment will be private.
