Mabel V. Mabie, 88, of Columbia City died at 9:55 a.m. Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City where she had been a resident since February 2011.

She was born March 20, 1927 in Huntington County, Indiana a daughter of the late Benjamin H. and Elsie Blanche (Schaaf) Simmons. Her formative years were spent in Columbia Township, Whitley County. She attended Columbia City High School.

On February 11, 1944 she was united in marriage to Lavon E. “Barney” Mabie. They made their home in Ligonier for two years. They moved to Columbia City in 1946. Mr. Mabie died October 30, 2002.

For 10 years she worked as a cook for Eddie and Beulah’s restaurant Columbia City and then 15 years in the laundry department of the Whitley County Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 98 Auxiliary and the VFW Post 1899 Auxiliary, Columbia City.

She is survived by her son, Paul (Penny) Mabie, Columbia City; grandsons, Jeff (Angie) Mabie, Columbia City, Jason (Karen) Mabie, Warsaw and Jimmy Mabie, Fort Wayne; granddaughter, Stacy Tucker, Fort Wayne; 12 step-grandchildren; 3 great granddaughters, 3 great grandsons and 4 step great granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by 6 brothers, Paul, Ned, Charles, Everett, Joe and James Simmons; two sisters, Ruby Bird and Anna Crawford; and a daughter-in-law, Julie (Scherer) Mabie.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. Wednesday until the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
