Dorothy was born on Thursday, Dec. 3, 1908, in Elizabeth, daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Dittmar) Thraen. She graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1926 and returned for a business course offered later.

Dorothy was a bookkeeper and housekeeper for the Rev. Paul Tuchlinsky at St. Joseph's Church, Aurora, for 13 1/2 years, and at St. Mary's Church, Galena, for 6 1/2 years prior. She was a postal clerk in Elizabeth for 23 years.

She retired in 1977 and moved back to Elizabeth, where she was a member of the Church of St. Mary and the Altar and Rosary Society. Dorothy belonged to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and sang with the Senior Songsters through Highland Community College.

During her years in Aurora, she traveled overseas to the British Isles, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Greece, Yugoslavia and the Holy Land. While in Galena, most of her trips were in the United States and Canada. She often traveled with Elma Berning, of Galena.

Dorothy was an accomplished seamstress who mastered the art of tatting and crocheted many of the church linens. She was the family historian, having kept accurate records of the Thraen, Dittmar and Wand families. Her mind and memory were excellent at recalling the history of many of the Elizabeth businesses as well.

Since her retirement, she loved to play cards and write letters. She often created her own greeting cards and tallies for local card clubs. She resided at the Elizabeth Nursing Home since July 11, 2000.

She recently delighted in the birth and visit of a great-great-nephew, Nicholas John Backenkeller. She also loved and received into her heart a foster daughter, Donna Austin Augilar. She shared a very special friendship with her caregiver, Jan Thraen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Cora Thraen; and a great-nephew, John B. Potter.
