Dennis was the second son of Martin M. (son of Moses, son of George) and Elmira J. (Achorn) Achorn. He attended the schools in Waldoboro and lived in the neighborhood until 1887, when he went to Lawrence, Mass., to learn the machinist's trade in the machine shop of John E. Dustin. Later he was connected with the Hamblet Machine company. In 1892 he went South, where he entered the employ of T.W. Garbutt & Co., Laurens county, Georgia, and later that of L.F. Achorn, Mt. Vernon, Ga.

In the fall of 1893 he visited Waldoboro, and October 18 was married to Miss Hilda M. Helmershausen of Jefferson, Me.; returned south soon after his marriage and lived there until July, 1897, when he returned to Jefferson, Me., where he has resided. He is a member of Enterprise Council No. 1, Jr. O.U.A.M.

On May 4, 1909, they adopted Hildas cousin's child, a six years old, named Marion Estelie Blake. A monument of Quincy granite bears the family names of "Helmershausen" and "Achorn."
