OBITUARY:
Joseph Manning Berry, son of W. C. and Letitia Berry was born December 11, 1837, near Ashville, North Carolina.
He was twice married. HIs first wife died while quite young, leaving one daughter, who is now Mrs. Emma A. Fasselmen of Washato, Oklahoma.
He was married to Miss Jane Lockenour March 30, 1865, by E. W. Cadwell, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Lockenour. To this union were born ten children, five of whom preceded their father to the grave. Those living are Dr. Virgil Berry, Okmulgee, Okla.; Mrs. Josie Montgomer, Moore, Okla.; Mrs. Victoria Hart, Western, Okla.; Mr. Earl Berry, El Paso, Texas.
More than fifty years ago he obeyed the Gospel, taking membership with the Church of Christ at Old Pekin, Indiana. He was a close observer, and by diligent study he gained a knowledge of the Bible to which few men attain. He was a peacher of the Gospel and often lectured on the Prophesies and the Book of Revelation. For the last twenty years of his life he gave special attention to the Book of Revelation for the purpose of writing a book on the subject. He had completed the manuscript and it was ready for the press. The arrangements for publication had not been made. He was a lover of music and composed many songs, both words and music. He had been failing in health for several years. About five years ago he and his wife came to Indiana from Oklahoma to assist in taking care of her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Lockenour, who is in her one-hundredth year. He had been a great sufferer for more than two years and often made the remark "What I suffer is indescribable." He was firm in the belief that no one could live a better life than that which the Scripture teaches us to live. He often spoke of approaching death, and that he would soon be done with the stren and awful realities of life, and was enjoying the blessed hope of a happy resurrection, and a glorious immortality beyond the desolation of death and the stillness of the tomb. He died without a struggle, like a child going to sleep. "Asleep in Jesus" sleep from which none ever wake to weep.
His wife, one daughter, his only sister, a number of relatives and friends, together with the writer were at his bedside when the end came, Jan. 24, 1917, at 2:30 p.m., age 79 years, 1 month and 13 days. Besides his children, he leaves his wife, one sister, Mrs. Letitia Brown of Oklahoma; one brother, Mr. Ephriam Berry, a retired minister of Louisville, Ky.; and a host of relatives and friend who knew him as a kind companion, a devoted father, a good neighbor and a man above ordinary intelligence.
On January 25, a short funeral service was conducted by the writer, in the prescence of relatives and friends, at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Lockenour, where he died. The remains were taken to Chelsea, Okla., for burial.
