Pianist and Conductor. He conducted opera in Germany and Prague from 1924 to 1936. Later he conducted the Scottish National Conductor, the NBC Orchestra and the New York Metropolitan Opera. In 1946 he became conductor of the Cleveland orchestra and headed until his death in 1970. His favourite artists were Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Mahler.
