Hilda's mother, Johanna Magnuson, married Louis Bergstrom in Sweden around 1886.

Hilda's mother and three older siblings, Mary (b1890), Willie (b1896) and Emanuel (b1897) immigrated to Manistee, Michigan around 1898 or 1899. Her father had already immigrated in 1894 or 1896 and was employed as a Teamster. Other siblings are Bertha/Bert (b1900), Ellen (b1903), Annie (b1904) and Roy (b1908). By 1910 the family was living in Tuolumne County and Louis was a laborer in a lumber mill.
