Mrs. Emma Karssen, age 96, of Alton, passed away on Friday, September 19, 1997, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 22, at 11:30 p.m., at the Alton Reformed Church. The Rev. Roger Voskuil officiated. Interment followed at Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.

Emma Gertrude was born October 14, 1900, at Harrison, South Dakota, the daughter of Pieter and Dirkje (Bomgaars) Beukelman. When she was two years old, her family moved to Middleburg. In 1912, they moved to Minnesota.

On March 10, 1925, she married Gerrit Karssen at Leota, Minnedsota. They first farmed at Lismore, Minnesota, and later moved to Leota. In 1932, they moved to Alton. Mr. Karssen passed away May 20, 1960, at Orange City.

Mrs. Karssen then helped elderly ladies in their homes. In August of 1993, she became a resident of the Long Term Care Facility of the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

She was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where she had been involved in the women's organizations.

Survivors include her two sons, Edwin Karssen, of Alton; and Peter Karssen, and his wife, Dorothy, of Orange City; a daughter and her husband, Edith and Howard Van Roekel, of Orange City; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Catherine Karssen; a grandson, Dale Karssen; an infant granddaughter, Vicki Sue Van Roekel; five brothers, and two sisters.

Memorials are being directed towards the Long Term Care New Piano Fund, for the Orange City Hospital's Long Term Care Facility.
