He sold the auction company, which primarily handled construction, utility and industrial equipment, in 1999 to Hunyady Auction Co.
Mr. Vilsmeier grew up in Philadelphia and Lansdale, graduating from Lansdale High School in 1947. He earned a bachelor's degree in business and finance from Pennsylvania State University in 1951. Active in the community and politics, he served as president of the Young Republican Club of Montgomery County. A licensed pilot, he belonged to the Quiet Birdmen Aviation Society. He was a Mason and a founding member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church.
