Valery Alexeyevich Legasov (01 September 1936 — 27 April 1988) was an inorganic chemist, scientist. He was the chief of the investigation committee of the Chernobyl disaster. Valery was born in Tula, Soviet Union. He graduated from the Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemistry and Technology. Later he graduated from Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. He received the degree of Candidate in 1967 and his doctorate in chemistry in 1972. He was a professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He was the chair of the department of Chemical Technology at the Chemistry Department of Moscow State University. He prepared a report of problems and issues at Chernobyl. But he was prevented by the government from telling the whole truth. They exerted pressure on his work, and on his person. Eventually two years after the accident he committed suicide by hanging himself from the stairwell of his apartment. He was 51 years old. Before he died he prepared an audiorecording. He told the whole truth on this tape. And the reason for his suicide. His suicide was at least partly due to his distress at not having spoken out about these factors at Vienna, the suppression of his subsequent attempts to do so, and the damage to his career that these attempts caused. On September 20, 1996 Russian President Boris Yeltsin posthumously conferred to Legasov the honorary title of Hero of the Russian Federation for his "courage and heroism" shown in his investigation of the Chernobyl disaster.
Legasov was advisor of the commission investigating the Chernobyl disaster. 2 years after Chernobyl he committed suicided. After his death ,the reason of Chernobyl disaster ( reactor RBMK ) has been removed. He is buried with his wife at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow
