He was the son of Eugene Eldon Graves (1 Jan 1903-28 Aug 1977) and Opal Breedlove Graves (21 Apr 1905-22 Jan 1995).

He graduated from Stillwater High School in 1952 and attended Oklahoma State University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

He enlisted in the Naval Air Force in July of 1954 and received his flight wings and officer commission in 1956 at Corpus Christi, Texas.

He married Sherry Ann Vandagriff on 25 Jan 1956. They had two children; Michael Graves and Debra Ann Graves.

He was killed when his jet airplane crashed soon after takeoff from the China Lake Naval Base in Calfornia.

He is buried alongside his parents in Fairlawn Cemetery, Stillwater, OK.
