Ref: A said accident occurred at the Mercer residence on Summit Street last Friday afternoon. Some neighborhood children of tender years were playing in a buggy to which a horse was attached when the horse became frightened and ran away throwing the children out and little Gage Doherty, the 13 year old son of Mrs. Jennie Doherty, was almost instantly killed, his head striking against a tree. The little son of Mr. S. W. Mercer had a leg broken and other children in the rig were more or less injured. It was a sad blow to the parents when little Gage was carried to the family residence in a dying condition. The funeral occurred Sunday from the home of Mrs. Doherty and her mother, Mrs. J. B. Daniels, and attracted one of the largest gatherings of the kind ever seen in the city. Rev. Dr. McCord officiated, speaking words of sympathy and drawing useful lessons from the sad event. Gage Doherty was born in Denver, May 13th 1883, and was the older of two sons. He was a very bright, lovable, cheerful boy, and popular with both young and old. In his studies he was an apt student; but attention was mostly drawn to him by reason of the unselfish tender care he gave to his little brother Joe, who for sometime has been an invalid. Gage was his constant companion; pushing his rolling chair and showing many other attentions that could only originate in the mind of a good affectionate brother. The entire community sympathizes with the afflicted family and regrets the accident.
