Superintendent of telegraphs for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, Mr. Gleason began railway service in 1874 as a clerk and assistant operator on the Columbia & Augusta and the Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio Railroads. From 1877 to 1882, he worked for the Federal government as President Rutherford B. Hayes' personal telegrapher. Leaving Federal service in 1882, he joined the Richmond & Danville Railroad to serve as a dispatcher at North Danville, Virginia, and Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1887, he was appointed train dispatcher for the Norfolk & Western Railway at Lynchburg, Virginia, moving to the C&O in 1888. He returned to the N&W in 1891, continuing in various dispatcher roles until 1898. That year he returned to the C&O, working numerous positions with the company until his 1921 appointment as superintendent of telegraphs. (from Railway Review, April 16, 1921)
