Robert W. Maddox, 70, of Princess Anne, returned to his Home with the Lord, on April 2, 2011.
Born March 28, 1942 in Cold Spring, New York, he was the son of the late Robert Charles Wood and Virginia Maddox.
His father taught him to fly Piper Cubs, the art of hunting and fishing and fostered a love of motorcycles that would last a lifetime. At Haldane High School, he was a true scholar-athlete: Valedictorian of his class, recipient of the Bausch and Lomb Award for Science, captain of the football team and baseball pitcher. His excellence in track and field earned him a college scholarship.
This tradition continued throughout his life, exercising and playing sports regularly while staying well read in the subjects of history, physical cosmology, philosophy and theology. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1962 from Columbia University. While there, Robert played football, ran track and became a member of the Delta Phi fraternity. He also met the beautiful young Helen Warwick.
They were married June 9, 1962. After university, Robert was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps where he earned first in his class at the Fort Knox Armor School. Early in his military career Robert served as a member of a security detachment in Morocco. There he was the guest of honor of the Caliph of Kenitra for the feast of Eid al-Fitr. At the invitation of the Moroccan Captain Mohamed Ben Oman at Fort Rissani, he accompanied the 4º Batallón de Meharistas for a desert patrol on camel-back.
Robert served in Viet Nam from February 1967-1968 where he commanded A Company, 3rd Tank Battalion, 3rd Marines in Que Son Valley. While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he became an avid diver. Stateside he was an instructor at the The Basic School for Marine Corps officers in Quantico, Virginia. He retired from military service at Camp Pendleton, California in 1982 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
After his military service, Robert and his family settled on the Eastern Shore. A lifetime member of the NRA, he joined the Salisbury Gun Club and the Bayview Hunt Club. He served as Director of Roads for Somerset County and later as Director of Program Open Space for the Department of Natural Resources for the State of Maryland before retiring in 1998. He remained active, medaling in the Maryland Senior Olympics and riding regularly as a member of a local cycling group. He continued to enjoy being out on the water boating and fishing. Recently he could often be found at the Schumaker Disc Golf Course.
Robert will dearly be missed by his wife of 48 years, Helen Maddox; daughter Leigh M. Maddox of Aberdeen, MD; sons, Robert C. Maddox of Wilmington, DE and Michael D. Maddox of Princess Anne, MD; brother, Gary Maddox and his Wife Linda of Tampa, FL; sister, Geraldine Maddox of Cold Spring, NY; brother-in-law, Richard Warwick and his wife Pauline of Snow Hill, MD; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, MD. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 6 to 8 pm and Thursday one hour prior to the service.
