Early history per Eula McGowan (Phillips-Carnella) as told by her uncle in 1958:

"Uncle Joe told us about our early history. He said our Grandpa started to the Gold Rush with a wagon train. When they came to the St. Francis River it was at flood stage and could not be crossed. The whole train camped for three months, as some of the people were sick. Grandpa's mule was lame, and he had to wait for it to get well. He was offered 80 acres of ground right where Poplar Bluff now stands for the mule that was lame - but it was a good young mule and very important property to a pioneer. The mules were not only transportation, but the means to tilling the ground. Well, Grandpa kept the mule and settled on some ground between Fisk and Puxico."

In 1958, Eula also wrote: "This spring, the government gave a lovely stone to our Grandfather McGowan for bravery in the Civil war. It was so tall that Uncle Joe had it cut in half and made into two exact stones - one for Grandma and one for Grandpa. They are snow white marble."

On January 5, 1864, James McGowan re-enlisted at the town of Big Black, Mississippi. His papers were signed by Captain Geo. W. Goddard and listed him as 5' 7" tall, light complexion, with grey eyes and light colored hair. The papers were witnessed by Captain G. W. Sanders. Other papers indicated he was with Hdqtrs. 2nd Corp in Chattanooga, Tennessee on 7 Nov 1864. His muster cards indicate that he enlisted in Vienna in 1861. In 1863 he was working in a regimental hospital. On the 1865 muster cards, it showed the 31st being in Louisville, Kentucky.

Illinois Infantry 31st Regiment Company D - Civil War. Moved from Illinois to Duck Creek, Stoddard County, Missouri when David was born - between 1878 and 1880.

Information given by Jimmie Joe McGowen, Bernie, MO 1996:
James McGowan, a farmer by occupation and living in Johnson County, Illinois, enlisted in the Civil War in August 22, 1861. 28 years old 5'7". light hair, gray eyes, light complexion. He was mustered into service September 18, 1861 in Cairo, Illinois, by Captain Pitcher, serving in Company D, 31st Illinois Infantry. James re-enlisted January 5, 1864 in the town of Big Black, Mississippi. He was mustered out July 19, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky, by Lt. Noyes. James apparently was the first of the McGowens from the family to come to Missouri. Stoddard County census show him living in Duck Creek Township in May of 1880. His last three sons being born in Missouri. He was also listed in the 1890 census for Civil War Veterans as living in the Asherville, Stoddard County area. He filed for invalid pension in December 1891, stating that he was unable to perform manual labor because of disease contracted while serving in the military. Bureau of pensions certificate states his disabilities as chronic diarrhea, disease of the liver, stomach and piles. Doctors I have questioned say the water and living conditions of the service were probably the cause of the afflictions described. At the time of his death, he was living in the Asherville area. His wife, Evelyne, filed a declaration for widow's pension December 23, 1896. Being in bad health herself, she died only six months later leaving two sons, Joseph and Lowery. On February 27, 1897, A. J. Mathis, a brother of Evelina's was given guardianship to Joseph and Lowery, both being under the age of 16. In March of 1897 a sale of personal property of James was held by A. J. Mathis.
