After graduation from Columbia University, Anne became a designer of high quality wooden toys in New York City.

In 1942 she married John Daniel Ford, of New York City, a World War 11 US Army Captain. a Bronze Star recipient, and professional writer, who proceeded her in death in 1987. She and her husband also resided in Chicago and Detroit before coming to Petoskey.

In the 1980s and 1990s Mrs. Ford was an active member of Crooked Tree Arts Council where her name was the first on an engraved silver cup as “Volunteer of the Year" for her work in organizing a docent program. Anne was best friends with her next door neighbor Irene Gordon who was a personal friend of Ernest Hemingway.

In the photo she is standing next to Irene at a 90’s Christmas Party at Ten Gables. (This was at a large summer cottage four doors away from them in what used to be called “Rosedale.”

History Note: This particular Christmas party was given by the Mattox family; they were friends and neighbors of Irene Gordon’s and Anne Ford’s. Their summer places sat only a few doors down on the waters edge of Little Traverse Bay.

Ten Gables, the 5000 square foot plus summer cottage, has been a vacation home and gathering spot for many notables and their servants for over a 100 years. Building inspector and well known local historian, Lowell Kosloskey (who attended THE Christmas party) told his friend and host, “Even though there's not one straight floor, the history and condition of this place is remarkable.”

Anne and Irene got a big kick out of that.

Owners Through the Years

1. Louis Seelbach-the Seelbach Hotel family in Louisville, Kentucky 2. The Comstock-Marshall Family- Ohio Professors/1950s Authors; 3. Mackinac Island Iroquios Hotel heirs who made it "Pebble Beach Inn" 4. Bodyflex Founders who used it for a summer retreat; 5. John and Cindy Carson (Cindy’s father was the County Superintendent of Petoskey Schools) they used it as a summer cottage. 6. The current use is not known.

All the above took place in a small community historically known as “Rosedale” where Hiram Rose and Native American signatures appeared on the original title, and Ernest Hemingway himself walked along the shores and visited Irene Gordon and the neighborhood.

This quaint area is named after Hiram Rose who was the first village president of Petoskey; What once was Lake Street is now named Boulder, then there is Rosedale, Stuart, and Belle Avenues. Today, they are all part of the City of Petoskey. Over the years, the Bay View like structures were used by summer residents, many of whom have belonged to adjacent Bay View Association. The oldest documented home still in existence, was built in 1880s.

Banhoff’s Ski Shop between Stuart and Rosedale was about where artist Gustave Hildebrand’s Art Studio was located. (He was the famous artist and friend of well known artist Frances Pailthorp. The two of them and their students created the Petoskey Centennial Mural that now hangs in North Central College. And both of them were friends of the late great Stanley Kellogg, another well known Petoskey artist.)

The biography and an interview of Anne Ford is forthcoming. In the meantime her obituary may be read at:
