William Wallace Nettles was the seventh child born to William J. Nettles and the fourth born to his second wife Mary D. Smeltz, he was born on June 16, 1850 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. William W. Nettles and Eliza Jane Turner, daughter of William Turner and Eliza Todd were married by Reverend William Ruffin Webb on March 17, 1876 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. William and Eliza had eight children Thomas Jefferson, George Wallace, Elritt Nathan, Ida who lived less than one year and died on October 16, 1882 and Theodore Allen Nettles. Only five of the names of William and Eliza's children were recorded in the public records. Census records show that William was a farmer for most of his life.Census records recorded on June 13, 1900 and April 22, 1910 state that Eliza was the mother of eight children and four were living. Census records show that William lived with his sister Indiana Nettles Landrum and her family for the rest of his life after his divorce. William died on April 23, 1927 at the Dixie Hospital in Hampton, Virginia. William was buried on April 24, 1927 in an unmarked grave at the Oakland Cemetery in Hampton, Virginia.
