NEW BERN - Robert Samuel Blackwell Jr., 78, of Fairfield Harbour, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Two Rivers HealthCare-Neuse Campus.
He was a native of Kansas City, Mo. and resided in New Bern for 20 years. He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, stationed in California, Guam, and Maryland. He earned a master's degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and retired from NSA where he was a Systems Analyst.
He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church and served as head usher, altar server, Eucharistic Minister and was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered as a CCD instructor and a Boy Scout Master, to the Senior Pharmacy and the Man-To-Man Prostate Cancer Program.
Husband 40 years of Shirley P. Blackwell.
He is also survived by son, Vincent DePaul Blackwell, Camp Hill, PA.; two daughters, Dwynne Marie Blackwell-Furberg, Moraga, CA and Andrea Maria Blackwell of Minnesota; and four grandchildren.
Interment, with full military honors, followed Mass of Christian Burial offered at the St. Paul Catholic Church with Monsignor Gerald L. Lewis presiding. Oscar's Mortuary, Inc., New Bern, assisted the family with the arrangements.
